ABSTRACT
This article does not delve into reconstructing the entire process of force mobilization, developments, or outcomes of the uprising led by Vo Tru and Tran Cao Van in the late 19th century across Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, the paper explains several intriguing aspects of this historical event, such as the harmony of nationalistic and religious elements in attracting a large number of diverse social classes to join the 1900 uprising in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh. Furthermore, the article offers an in-depth analysis of Vo Tru—a unique leader who guided the local population in their resistance against French colonialists under the banner of “Minh Trai Chu Te” (The Lord of Minh Trai) during the twilight years of the 19th century. Finally, the paper raises the question of whether there was a convergence between the movement of Vo Tru and Tran Cao Van and other religiously-colored anti-French resistance movements in Vietnam during the late 19th century.
