ABSTRACT

Energy crisis, especially fuel scarcity, is a significant hindrance to the effective operation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. This study was examined the impact of fuel scarcity on the productivity of SMEs and assessed the effectiveness of government intervention strategies. A survey research design was adopted, using structured questionnaires administered across selected states in Nigeria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including tables and charts. The authors discovered that fuel scarcity significantly affects the productivity of SMEs in the country, resulting in the decline of economic activities. The study concluded that fuel scarcity is a significant hindrance to the effective operation of SMEs and recommended that the Nigerian government, through its regulatory agencies, ensure that the sales and distribution of petroleum products, as well as the functionality of refineries, are properly monitored. It also recommended promoting the use of solar power as an alternative energy source to boost SME productivity and enhance economic development in the country.
