ABSTRACT

The rapid digitalization of religious discourse in Indonesia has fundamentally transformed the ways in which Islamic authority, ethics, and law are expressed and contested in the public sphere. The #BoikotTrans7 controversy—triggered by public perceptions that a television program demeaned pesantren traditions—emerged as a catalyst for widespread moral indignation and collective ethical reflection among Indonesia’s Muslim digital communities. This study examines how digital resistance and affective participation have reshaped the dynamics of fiqh-based authority and notions of justice in the country’s evolving online religious landscape. Employing an interdisciplinary socio-legal digital ethnography, the research analyzes approximately 1.078 online comments and discussions collected from various YouTube platforms, guided by Creswell’s qualitative methodology. The findings show that digital outrage gradually developed into a participatory reconstruction of moral order, as lay Muslims engaged in articulating and negotiating the values of justice (‘adl), humility (tawāḍu‘), and forgiveness (maghfirah). This shift reflects the emergence of a distributed moral authority, co-created through affective and ethical interactions rather than institutional hierarchy. The study argues that Indonesia’s digital publics now operate as a new majlis al-fiqh—a participatory arena where Islamic law is interpreted through collective emotion and ethical reasoning. Ultimately, the research contributes to socio-legal scholarship by demonstrating that digital media do not diminish Islamic authority but rather transform it into a dialogical, participatory, and affectively grounded moral system suited to the digital age.
